Day 3665: Ealing Feeling
The Ying and Yang Marathon Tale!
After chasing kids for 11 years, this year, wifey and I, decided to chase something different together as a couple – a half marathon finish line. But our characters couldn't be more opposite!
I, the procrastinator extraordinaire, realized I had just one week to train before the half marathon, so I crammed all my training into one treadmill session. Huffed, puffed and hurt my heel, but declared myself 'ready'!
Meanwhile, wifey trained diligently for three months.
On the race day, she was excited as supernova, up at the crack of dawn, had breakfast, prepped her gear, memorized the route, and had emergency meds on standby – and kept waking up me.
As for me, I sauntered out of bed about an hour and a half before race time, leisurely had breakfast in the car while wifey drove.
We joined our west London family running crew Dipak Shrestha, Sujan 'n Reema Shakya and Meghna in the park. To start the race, we placed ourselves with the 1 hour 50 minute pacers but, wifey and I were soon trailing behind with the 2-hour pacers – when Dipak and Sujan ran off.
During the race, wifey stayed cool as a cucumber, keeping a steady pace and a bright smile.
Me? I was a one-man circus – getting bored, sprinting, walking, stretching, eating, drinking, dancing, complaining, and maybe even napping.
Wifey finished her first half marathon in 2 hours and 22 minutes, and I crossed the line just a minute later in 2 hours and 23 minutes. Our west London crew finished within 10-15 minutes of us.
Moral of the story: Do what you love, however you like. You might be a minute late, but you'll get there! – Just find a ‘Ying’ to your ‘Yang’.
Big Cheers Nikki Shakya - Ying to my Yang! I promise to bring circus to your otherwise calm life, always.
